What: The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will announce the results of a national survey of consumers on the role of quality information in health care decision making. The survey results, which also include people's opinions on medical errors and patient safety, will be announced as part of a conference on health care information that is being held on December 11-12, at the Hyatt Regency, in Bethesda, MD.

Why: The purpose of this two-day conference, "Informing Consumers About Health Care Quality: New Directions for Research and Action," is to discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving the communication of health care quality information to the public. This conference is sponsored by AHRQ, the California HealthCare Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Care Financing Administration, and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. A detailed conference agenda showing the speakers and breakout sessions can be found on the Web site of the Federal Quality Interagency Coordination (QuIC) Task Force http://www.quic.gov.
In particular, the goal of the conference is to discuss and identify specific strategies for communicating with four groups of people: those employed in the public and private sectors, the elderly, people with special health care needs (chronic conditions, disabilities, etc.), and people with special communication needs related to culture and literacy. The framework for this discussion will be a Research and Action Agenda, also available on the QuIC Web site, that has been developed over the past year by an interdisciplinary Work Group on Consumer Health Information. Background papers that address issues related to the communication of quality information to these four specific groups can be found on the QuIC Web site, as well.
