ABSTRACT

October 1996, Vol. 118, No. 10

A profile of contingent workers

Anne E. Polivka
Research Economist, Office of Employment Research and Program Development, Bureau of Labor Statistics

Contingent workers were more likely to be female, black, young, enrolled in school, and employed in services and construction industries than were noncontingent workers; more than 10 percent were teachers. This article profiles contingent workers using data collected through a special supplement to the February 1995 Current Population Survey (CPS). This supplement provides the first comprehensive measurement of contingent workers using carefully constructed definitions.
