Black Sea Region Grain Exports Rebound

Bar chart highlighting grain production and exports for Black Sea region.

Greater grain supply in the Black Sea region is boosting exports and creating stronger competition in key world import markets. For wheat, exports are expected to more than triple from last year’s very low level. Russian exports, for instance, have surged in recent months and sales have been made to new Asian markets such as Pakistan and Indonesia. As Barley production reaches a near record, exports are also forecast to surge by almost 2 million tons (50 percent), much of which will go to Middle Eastern and North African markets. This cheap barley has made the EU uncompetitive so far, perhaps contributing to the Commission’s recent reinstatement of export subsidies. Those subsidized exports will likely displace Australia and Canada, whereas Black Sea barley still has a comparative freight advantage into the Middle East. Corn exports will also see a boost, primarily from Serbia and Romania, where the largest crop in 7 years will lead to its highest exports in 2 decades. Ukraine is also expected to have a strong export campaign again this year.
