Brazil's investment in its meat industries is paying off. In 2003, Brazil surpassed the United States as the world's second largest beef exporter and is set to become the largest in 2004; its poultry production nearly doubled between 1997 and 2002, becoming the world's second largest poultry exporter; and its pork production grew on average 10 percent a year over the past 10 years, exporting 603,000 tons in 2003, almost a quarter of its production.
