Assessment: Oklahoma Tornadoes

On May 3, 1999, over two dozen tornadoes were spawned by multiple
supercell thunderstorms in central Oklahoma. The strongest and
deadliest moved into Moore and the southern Oklahoma City metropolitan
area. The tornadoes claimed 42 lives and 795 people were injured.
Over 10,000 homes and businesses were leveled throughout the
region with a total damage estimate of $1 billion.
On Tuesday, May 4, 1999, NWS officials in conjunction with the
Civil Air Patrol (CAP), conducted an aerial survey of the tornado
tracks. The maps and descriptions presented here are the preliminary
results of the storm data assessment survey. |
