harkin announces $287,000 for iowa state university

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that Iowa State University will receive a $287,000 grant from the Department of Justice (DOJ).  The funds will be used to complete the University’s Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) forensics program.  Harkin is a senior member of the Senate panel that funds DOJ programs.

“I am pleased to pass these funds along to Iowa State’s forensics program,” Senator Harkin said, “I am hopeful that this money will help to move their curriculum forward and provide students with the valuable hands-on experience that will give them an advantage after graduation.”

The DART program is used to analyze differences in ink types.  Specifically, these funds are going to complete the programs computer-searchable library, which will result in an improved tool for analysis of inks in questioned documents.  This method will result in a reduction in examination time, which will in turn reduce backlogs of untested evidence.
