  • Selected Documents from the Central Classified Files, 1927 - 1953
    22 multi-page documents relating to the National Park Service, Region IV, have been digitized. The materials relate to the administration of all subordinate units. Among the subjects covered are NPS building requirements; wartime protective measures within the parks; and activities of the Emergency Conservation Work (ECW), Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and Work Projects Administration (WPA). Also included are correspondence, narrative and statistical reports, bulletins, orders, circulars, registers, and publications. Non-textual records consist of maps and photographs. These materials are held by  NARA's Pacific Region (San Bruno, CA).

  • Special Report from the Wildlife Files, 1929 - 1940
    1 multi-page special report on the "Aspen Problem at Rocky Mountain National Park" has been digitized from this series. This narrative report discusses damage to aspen trees by beaver and elk in an area where animal populations are protected. The report is illustrated with captioned photographs. It highlights conflicting environmental goals of the National Park Service at a park where aspen trees are a major component of forests, providing food for wildlife, protection of watersheds from erosion, and aesthetic beauty for visitors. This document is held by NARA's Pacific Region (San Bruno, CA).

  • Photographs of the Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, 1929
    364 photographs have been digitized from this series. The photographs illustrate the history, geology, botany, and physical features of Zion Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Specific subjects include Indian ruins and pictographs; tourist groups and park facilities; abandoned Mormon farms, and the home of the discoverer of Zion Canyon, Ebenezer Bryce. Many scenic shots are of natural bridges, caves, rock formations, waterfalls, flowers, trees and trails. These materials are held by NARA's Still Picture Records (College Park, MD).

  • Ansel Adams Photographs of National Parks and Monuments, 1933 - 1942
    220 photographs have been digitized from this series. In 1941 the National Park Service commissioned Ansel Adams to create a photo mural for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. The theme was to be nature as exemplified and protected in the U.S. National Parks. The project was halted because of World War II and never resumed. Some prints date to the 1930s and were perhaps made before the commission but used by Ansel Adams for the project. These materials are held by NARA's Still Picture Records (College Park, MD).
