Captain Walt Markee OSP Fish & Wildlife Division Office: (503) 934-0221 Photograph link valid for 30 days - Source: Oregon State Police (left to right: Captain Walt Markee and Sergeant Todd Hoodenpyl)  A Tillamook-area Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division sergeant whose qualities were described as "infectious", an "outstanding role model", and a "visionary", received the division's 2007 "Fish & Wildlife Trooper of the Year" award during a surprise presentation today. Sergeant TODD HOODENPYL, age 37, transferred to the OSP Tillamook office in April 2006 as a senior trooper with a career goal of promoting in the future to a sergeant position at that office. He achieved that goal in December 2007, and to this point throughout his nearly 13-year OSP career HOODENPYL has approached his job selflessly gaining the highest level of respect by other supervisors, his peers, subordinates and other agencies and community groups. "Todd is not only a leader respected by many; he also has a vision knowing what he wants to do and takes on many responsibilities that helps the Department, local communities, and fish and wildlife partner organizations," said Captain Walt Markee, OSP Fish & Wildlife Division Director. This is the Division's second presentation of the award that is based on criteria including professionalism, dedication to citizens and natural resources of our State, and work ethic. Nominations were received from around the State and then reviewed by regional and General Headquarters staff before the award winner's selection. In one of the nominations received, "the Officer of the Year Award should acknowledge more than just the trooper who makes the exceptional game case, it is about the trooper who goes to work everyday with the qualities that Todd has and conducts his work in a manner that makes the Division and Department proud. Todd is that trooper." According to OSP Northwest Region Fish & Wildlife Division Lieutenant Steve Lane, HOODENPYL had prepared himself to the point that he was able to take over the responsibilities of a Sergeant immediately because of his vision as well as his desire to succeed and do his best for the division and Department. In addition to the many cases he worked and solved, HOODENPYL was recognized for his involvement with the community, relationships with private timberland owners and area public safety agencies, and his help with organizing the Portland Sportsman Show and "Wall of Shame". "Sergeant HOODENPYL, regardless of rank, is the type of officer that we all should strive to emulate. I would be happy with forty-three officers just like him in this region," said Lane. HOODENPYL joined the OPS in October 1995 and was initially assigned at Fossil in the Patrol Services Division. In August 1999 he moved into the Fish & Wildlife Division, remaining at the Fossil work site until his transfer to the McMinnville Area Command office in 2005 where he worked for one year before transferring to Tillamook. The primary responsibility of the Fish & Wildlife Division is enforcement of fish, wildlife, and commercial fishing laws and protection of natural resources. The members of the Fish and Wildlife Division also enforce traffic, criminal, boating, livestock and environmental protection laws in addition to responding to emergency situations. Last year's honoree, and the first recipient of the award, was Trooper Luke Schwartz from the OSP St. Helens work site. ### www.oregon.gov/OSP ###
