07/11/2008
Sergeant Dean Perske
OSP Fish & Wildlife Division - Roseburg
Office: (541) 440-3334

A third illegally poached elk was found in the Glendale area where two others were discovered Thursday morning as Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish and Wildlife troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office continue the investigation. Troopers are seeking the public's help to solve these cases which they believe are connected. The latest discovery is the seventh bull elk shot in open fields and left to waste in that area since the end of October 2007.

On July 10, 2008 after OSP Fish & Wildlife troopers cleared the scene where two dead bull elk were found shot in a large opening just off McCullough Creek Road in the Glendale area, another discovery of a third dead elk was reported. Early Thursday morning, a local resident was out walking and found two dead bull elk that had been shot while standing in the large opening. One of the elk, a 5X5 branch antler bull, had apparently died shortly after being shot and had gone to waste prior to a trooper being able to salvage it. The other larger 6X6 bull elk was still alive when officers arrived but it had to be killed. The trooper was able to salvage the meat and it was given to a local charity.

Information from local residents indicates three shots were heard just prior to 4:00 a.m. that morning.

OSP Fish & Wildlife troopers responded back to the area on the morning of July 11th and found the third dead 6X6 elk in tall brush about 200 yards from where the other elk were located. Troopers were unable to salvage meat for charitable distribution.

A reward up to $6000.00 has been set up by local land owners, elk hunters, and the Roseburg Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for killing the elk.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Oregon State Police office in Roseburg at (541) 440-3334 ext 3417 or the Oregon State Police Hunter TIP line at 1-800-472-7888.
