An Oregon State Police (OSP) Trooper assigned to Roseburg Area Command office was recognized Wednesday for his exceptional work when he was announced as the recipient of the "Trooper of the Quarter", an honor presented by the OSP Patrol Services Division to an OSP trooper from one of three regions each quarter of the calendar year.

Trooper Brian Assmus was presented the award by Captain Randie Martz, OSP's Southwest Region Commander. "During his brief two years with our Department, Trooper Assmus developed into the office leader for enforcement-related activities and has made a significant impact through his dedicated work, including numerous excellent narcotics-related cases in late 2006 and early 2007," Captain Martz said.

Since November 2006, four major narcotic's cases were noted involving Trooper Assmus:
  • In November 2006, Trooper Assmus recovered 5.5 pounds of marijuana and arrested three suspects who have all pled guilty related to the case.
  • In December 2006, Trooper Assmus found 3.5 pounds of crystal methamphetamine and arrested two suspects who pled guilty related to the case.
  • In March 2007, Trooper Assmus arrested two suspects after finding approximately 550 ecstasy tablets, a small amount of heroin, and over $5,000 cash.
  • In April 2007, Trooper Assmus arrested two suspects after finding 2.5 pounds of marijuana and approximately $2,000 cash.

After working two years as a patrol trooper, Assmus, age 32, transferred July 1st to a detective position in the Criminal Investigations Division at the Roseburg Area Command office. He also recently became a defensive tactics instructor and assists the OSP with recruiting future department applicants.

Trooper Assmus (pronounced OSS – MUSS) is the third recipient from the Roseburg Area Command office to receive the award since its inception in 2002.
