The 10:00 a.m. graduation ceremony marked the completion of the seventh fully-integrated basic police class facilitated by DPSST - which provides statutorily-required basic training to newly-hired city police officers, county sheriff's deputies and OSP troopers. The new OSP recruit troopers are representative of the continued recruitment and training plan for many exciting law enforcement career opportunities with the Department. Approved funding during the 2007 and 2008 legislative sessions provided 139 new patrol trooper positions necessary in achieving the goal of Governor Ted Kulongoski and legislative leadership for OSP 24/7 limited patrol coverage. OSP Superintendent Timothy McLain noted the Department is not only meeting recruiting and hiring goals, but is exceeding them. "New ideas and aggressive recruitment approaches have created an unexpected surprise, contradictory to national trends in recruiting and hiring where other agencies report difficulties in these areas. The newly graduated recruit troopers, as well as the recently sworn in 22 others who began their training late August, are the type of high quality individuals who are part of the future of the Oregon State Police and its vision of premier public safety services for Oregon," said McLain. One of the newest recruitment ideas led to new Department video tours now available on the completely re-tooled recruitment website at www.OSPTrooper.com providing a glimpse at recruit training and the different work troopers do. The recruiting website also provides important information to prospective applicants, including the ability to complete an online application and immediately email it back to OSP. Six OSP recruits will join 23 city police, 10 county sheriffs, and one fire agency graduating recruit officers. Since July 1, 2007 OSP has hired and retained over 90 recruit troopers, and an additional 35 individuals have received conditional job offers for recruit schools scheduled October 2008 and January 2009. Starting January 2007, OSP integrated recruit trooper training with newly hired city and county officers for the 16-week DPSST training at the Oregon Public Safety Academy. OSP recruit troopers are required to receive 24 weeks of training including the 16-week DPSST training sandwiched between four weeks of pre- and advanced training unique to the requirements of OSP. Following graduation, the OSP recruit troopers' training includes a 4-week OSP Advanced Academy training program at DPSST and a 2 – 3 month field training program with an OSP trooper. Those who submit applications for upcoming hiring opportunities are required to participate in Entry Level Testing that includes a physical fitness test consisting of push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile timed run. Applicants, who successfully complete the physical fitness tests, proceed to take a written test to evaluate basic educational competencies.
