Jennifer, we have open enrollment. We use a number of the methods you
described, but because we are state funded we must use TABE for assessment.
To do this systematically, we use an individual attendance sheet that lists
class sessions. Each day the student comes to class, he/she enters the date
of the class, what was covered in class & what they worked on. This not
only keeps track of what goes on, but it is a way for the student to reflect
on what they've learned in class. There is space for the instructor to make
notes about the student's work and any suggestions for more practice or
assignments. At intervals, (for us it is after 38 hours of enrollment) the
sheet indicates it is time for assessment. At that time, the student is
given a post-test. There is also a space for the instructor and student to
mark whether the student is making progress toward goals, and a check-off to
note attendance, motivation, attitude and self-concept. If needed, we
modify goals and/or continue with their plan. We use a portfolio to keep
work samples, the individual attendance sheets, and other tests and
evaluations. Hope this helps.

Subject: [NIFL-ASSESSMENT:171] Assessment

Greetings,

My name is Jennifer Morrow with the Johnson County Public Library Adult
Learning Center. I am in the process of starting an open enrollment GED
group whose focus will be how help students use skills needed for the GED
test in a practical way in their roles as family members, workers and
community members. I have decided not to assess them with any standardized
test upon entry to the group because I don't think I could accurately track
level gains with an open enrollment situation. I plan to have ongoing
student reflection and goal setting as a means of assessing the student
progress but I don't know if that will be enough to make my group grow and
respond to the learners' needs. Does anyone have an open enrollment group
of any kind? What kind of assessment do you use? How do you assess how
activities are going? Do you keep student reflections? What kind of
facilitator assessment do you use? Any information or resources would be
greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Jennifer Morrow
