Senator Boxer Supports Funding to Fight Illegal Drugs
May 20, 2008
Illegal drugs and drug-related crimes continue to plague American communities. Today, more than ever, we need to support joint efforts by federal, state and local authorities to help struggling communities in their fight against drugs.
I recently joined a bipartisan group of Senators in urging the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government to support funding for the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Program at the Office of National Drug Control Policy. As you know, at a local level, HIDTAs are overseen by a board that has equal membership of federal and local law enforcement officers. These boards help bring federal resources to support local efforts to deal with threats, problems, and strategies.
In 2007, HIDTA programs were successful in seizing 3,855 tons of marijuana, 69 tons of cocaine, three tons of methamphetamine and almost a ton of heroin, with a total street value of somewhere around $23.7 billion. HIDTA programs also seized $566 million in cash. In light of these successes, I am fully supportive of adequate federal funding to allow the program to continue working with local law enforcement programs to apprehend both illegal drugs and the people who deal in them.
You can count on me to continue to support successful and proven programs that allow federal and local officials to work together to fight crime.
Sincerely,
Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
