Maritime Search Planning (MSP) Course

Course overview. The MSP course is a three and a half week (17 weekdays) resident course that convenes throughout the year. The course begins promptly at 0800 on the applicable convening date. All students will graduate by 1430 on the fourth Tuesday of the course, unless there is a holiday during the course convening, in which case graduation will be at 1430 on the fourth Wednesday. You will receive a “Welcome Aboard” e-mail indicating applicable uniform, pre-arrival reading assignments and basic navigation knowledge expected of every SAR school student prior to arrival.

The course is designed to train U.S. Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force personnel as well as International students (officers and enlisted) assigned to Area, District, Group or Sector Command Centers to perform maritime search planning in the coastal and oceanic environments. The course is computer-based and teaches students how to use the ArcGis (Graphic Information System) and Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System (SAROPS).

Recommended pre-reporting studies/tips. Refresher of basic math and algebra. Familiar with the “Time/Speed/Distance” navigation calculation skills.

Search Coordination & Execution (SC&E)

Course overview. The SC&E course is a one week (four day) SAR School instructor led course that convenes up to twenty times throughout the year at selected locations throughout the country. The course is a "no-drift calculation” version of the resident course. The objective is to train students who conduct operations at the On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) level in the fundamentals of search coordination and planning. The course is generally provided to co-pilots and first pilots in an upgrade syllabus to become aircraft commanders, station personnel, patrol boat crews, and Coast Guard Cutter bridge teams. This course fulfills the requirement for SAR training in order to upgrade to Aircraft Commander as required by COMDTINST M3710.1, as well as coxswain certification

Recommended pre-reporting studies/tips. Although not required, it would be helpful if students had a working knowledge of the Coast Guard Addendum to the National SAR Supplement to the IAMSAR Manual and a refresher of basic math and algebra.

SAR Supervisor Course

Course overview. The SAR Supervisor (SARSUP) course is designed to provide an overview of critical SAR policies and procedures for personnel within the SAR chain of command who do not require the detailed full three and a half week SAR planning course. Topics covered in this three day course include: SAR policy, SAR planning, SAR coordination, watch vigilance, decision making, SAR case suspension, SAR case studies, Legal Aspects of SAR as well as a SAROPS drift simulation and search planning demonstration.

Recommended pre-reporting studies/tips. Although not required, it would be helpful if students had a working knowledge of the National SAR Supplement (NSS) to the International Aeronautical and Maritime SAR (IAMSAR) Manual and the Coast Guard Addendum to the NSS.
Prerequisites. Be serving in or assigned to one of the following billets:

  • Area/District/ SAR Program Manager/Staff
  • Group/Sector CO/XO/Response Department Head
  • Air Station CO/XO/OPS
  • Personnel within the SAR Chain of Command between the SAR Controller and the CO
