INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
AoA-IM-97-12
TO : STATE AND AREA AGENCIES COVERING A COUNTY OR METROPOLITAN
AREA WITH A MINIMUM OF 500 OLDER REFUGEES AGE 65 OR OLDER
SUBJECT : FY 1997 Discretionary Grant Announcement to
Assist Older Refugees
Attached is a copy of an announcement of funds available to assist
older refugees that has been issued by the Office of Refugee Resettlement
of the Administration for Children and Families. Eligible grantees
are restricted to those state agencies that are responsible for
refugee programs. However, collaboration between aging and refugee
agencies is strongly encouraged and applications which link the
aging network with agencies serving older refugees will receive
priority consideration.
We are providing this information since you may be contacted
by the state agency responsible for refugee programs, or may wish
to initiate contact with this agency. We believe that partnerships
at all levels of government are in the interest of our customers.
The announcement identifies 35 counties or metropolitan areas
in 20 states that meet the minimum threshold of 500 older refugees
age 65 or older. Applications will be submitted by the state agency
on behalf of eligible counties in the state. A total of $9.5 million
is available. For counties having at least 2,000 older refugees,
awards may range from $250,000 to $3 million; for counties with
between 500 and 2,000 older refugees, awards may range from $50,000
to $250,000. Applications are for a one-year budget period, but
may cover a two-year project period. The closing date for applications
is July 30, 1997.
