Captain Thomas R. Hale

Chief, Office of Training, Workforce Performance & Development

Captain Thomas R. Hale hails from Vermont and is a 1982 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Science. He holds a Master of Science degree in Management awarded by Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies awarded by the United States Naval War College.

Captain Hale’s initial assignment upon receiving his commission was Deck Watch Officer and Communications Officer aboard USCGC POLAR SEA (WAGB-11) homeported in Seattle, Washington. Subsequent afloat assignments include: Executive Officer in USCGC KATMAI BAY (WTGB-101) homeported in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan; Commanding Officer in USCGC THUNDER BAY (WTGB-108) homeported in Rockland, Maine; Commandant of Cadets in America’s Tall Ship – USCG Barque EAGLE (WIX-327); Executive Officer of USCGC DEPENDABLE (WMEC-626) and USCGC DAUNTLESS (WMEC-624) homeported in Galveston, Texas; and, Commanding Officer in USCGC VIGOROUS (WMEC-627) homeported in Cape May, New Jersey.

Assignments ashore have included Duty Officer at the Greater Antilles Section Operations Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Law Enforcement Officer for the Greater Antilles Section; Faculty Member in the Professional Studies Branch at the Coast Guard Academy; Coast Guard Liaison Officer and Faculty Member at the Naval Staff College, Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island; Chief of the Operations Programming and Budgeting Division at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington DC; and the Coast Guard and Homeland Security Chair and Assistant Professor at the National War College in Washington DC.

Captain Hale’s personal awards include two Meritorious Service Medals with “O”, four Coast Guard Commendation medals with “O”, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal with “O” and various service and unit awards.
