CFO Jeffrey Fernandez, COO David McGraw and CIO Sandy Merola

One of the key management initiatives in the new Lab contract is Workstation Standardization and Centralization (WSC). This initiative will be implemented over 5 years and is expected to save the Lab over $1 million with an additional $4.5 million in increased productivity including user time, purchasing and cyber security savings. After full implementation, ongoing annual savings of more than $400,000 are estimated with productivity benefits of $1.4 million.

The initiative called for an initial implementation in the IT Division, which began a year ago, followed by full implementation in Lab Support organizations. After these phases, WSC will be offered to scientific divisions as an optional service. The IT implementation phase has now been extended to cover the Lab Support organizations including Operations, Chief Financial Office, Lab Directorate and Internal Audit.

IT will be responsible for implementation of the initiative, which will centralize the support effort for the organizations included, and will procure and deploy new workstations on a planned basis approximately every 4 years for desktops and every 3 years for laptops.

We are committed to this program and ask you to provide your full cooperation with implementation. Over time the initiative will change how some of us receive support for our workstations. We will continue to refine WSC to make it as effective and efficient as possible, but as with any new program, there will likely be some growing pains. We ask for your patience and support, as well as your feedback. Each Lab Support organization has assigned a coordinator to work with the IT team. For a list of coordinators, go here. Please send any ideas or concerns to your assigned coordinator and to the IT team at workstations@lbl.gov.
