U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor Announces Grant to Train Pennsylvania Workers for Careers in Automotive Industry
Grant Is Part of $6.3 Million for Automotive Industry Training Under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative

HARRISBURG, Pa. - U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco today announced a $95,000 grant to the Pennsylvania Automotive Association (PAA) to train workers for careers in the automotive industry. The grant is part of a $6.3 million effort for automotive industry training funded under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative.

"According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the automotive services sector will face serious labor shortages between the years 2002 and 2012," said DeRocco. "This grant will help address this industry challenge and at the same time prepare participants for good jobs with career pathways in the automotive industry."

PAA and its partners in the project, including Harrisburg Career and Technology Academy, the Pennsylvania Public Workforce System, Harrisburg Area Community College, Snap-On, Inc. and Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES), will use the grant to educate, train, and employ new automotive service technicians.

With this grant, PAA will strengthen an on-the-job mentor/intern program and build upon existing business connections for the Harrisburg Career and Technology Academy, while providing career opportunities to students facing social and economic barriers.

Through this pilot, students will continue education at Harrisburg Area Community College or other approved manufacturer-specific training programs. Tools also will be furnished to each student by Snap-On, Inc.

The President's High Growth Job Training Initiative is a strategic effort to better prepare workers to take advantage of new job opportunities in high growth sectors of the American economy. Through executive forums with leaders of expanding industries, critical workforce gaps and issues are identified. Solutions are then created in cooperation with employers, educational institutions and the public workforce system. For more information, please visit www.doleta.gov/BRG/JobTrainInitiative/.
