Skywarn Recognition Day was developed by the National Weather Service and the Amateur Radio Relay League to celebrate the contributions that Skywarn Weather Spotters make to public safety. Spotters, using amateur radio, report severe weather such as tornadoes and damaging wind to the National Weather Service offices. The meteorologists use these reports in preparing or verifying severe weather warnings.
For additional information about this event, visit the National Skywarn Recognition Day Website or contact NWS Birmingham's Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) Jason B. Wright at jason.b.wright@noaa.gov or (205) 664-3010 ext. 223. For additional information concerning Amateur Radio program operations at the NWS Birmingham Office, email rthomas@alert-alabama.org.
