Intensive Community Sites

In June 2005, NIH launched We Can!™ with 14 Founding Intensive Community Sites across the country. NIH provided these sites with curricula training, materials, and technical assistance to support local partnership and media outreach. In exchange, the sites agreed to implement an intensive version of the We Can! program over one year.

We Can! has now expanded the program to allow other enthusiastic organizations to partner with NIH and run We Can! at this intensive level. These Intensive Community Sites work with NIH to improve national outreach and receive the following benefits:

    • National recognition from the National Institutes of Health on the We Can! Web site
    • Free starter kit packed with We Can! resources and materials
    • Access to a variety of science-based resources that strengthen and sustain programs
    • Inclusion in the We Can! Intensive Community Site network and participation in Intensive Site planning
    • Technical assistance shared through conference calls, listservs, and e-newsletters
    • National promotion of program efforts to We Can! national partners, federal agencies, other community sites, and the media

In exchange, NIH asks each We Can! Intensive Community Site to implement ALL of the following activities in one year:

    • Implement three or more We Can! youth programs/curricula
    • Implement three or more We Can! parent programs/curricula
    • Host three or more We Can! community outreach events
    • Work with local partners to implement We Can! programs
    • Pursue local We Can! media coverage
    • Use the online We Can! Activity Forms to report on each curriculum implementation and each community event
    • Submit an abstract of your year's We Can! activities for posting on the We Can! Web site
