Fort Belvoir

1.0 Site Identification

Location: Aberdeen, MD
License No.:19-10306-02
Docket No.:030-36754
License Status: Unknown
Project Manager:Tom McLaughlin

2.0 Site Status Summary

Site has been terminated.

Fort Belvoir has primarily used the Vault as a radioactive waste storage area in support of their research laboratory. Results of a characterization survey indicate the presence of elevated tritium, carbon 14, cesium 137, promethium 147, americium 241, and thorium 232. The extent of the contamination onsite is expected to be limited to the surface paint and concrete for most of the radionuclides present at the site. There is the possibility that tritium contamination has migrated into the concrete structure.

3.0 Major Technical or Regulatory Issues

During a site visit and meeting on November 18, 2004, the Army stated that all of the concrete would be shipped off-site as rad waste. A draft EA was sent to the VA Department of Environmental Quality for review on March 7, 2005. The VA DEQ returned comments on the draft EA on April 13, 2005. These comments were then passed on to the Army. The Vault structure has been torn down and placed in containers for shipment to Envirocare in Utah. A pipe was found under the Vault and removed in November 2005. A final status survey is being conducted and the license should be terminated in early 2006.
