The HFA is committed to making affordable housing a reality for new homebuyers in the nation's capital. The HFA provides individual credit and budget counseling and low-interest mortgage loans to individuals hoping to buy homes in Washington. Through its Home Resource Center and Mortgage Loan Group, the HFA can take individuals through the entire homeownership process, from learning how to buy a home to obtaining a mortgage loan.

The mission of the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is to create and preserve opportunities for affordable housing and economic development and to revitalize underserved communities in the District of Columbia. DHCD's key objectives are to:

  • Finance the production of quality affordable housing and homeownership opportunities at the project level and the household level,
  • Preserve quality affordable housing and homeownership opportunities,
  • Increase economic opportunities for low and moderate income residents, and
