Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Focus

The ENERGY STAR Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Focus provides pharmaceutical manufacturers with opportunities to overcome barriers to energy efficiency in their businesses. This is accomplished by promoting strategic corporate energy management practices and resources that facilitate continuous improvement. EPA began the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Focus in 2004, and participation is open to all manufacturers with plants based in the U.S.

ENERGY STAR Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Energy Performance Indicator (EPI)

The EPI for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is being developed by Duke University with input from Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Focus participants. This tool will enable corporate-and industry-wide benchmarking and rate the energy efficiency of a single U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. The EPI will use basic inputs to provide a percentile ranking of a single plant’s energy efficiency by comparing it to the industry’s average and “efficient” (defined as the 75th percentile) plants.

For more information on the pharmaceutical manufacturing plant EPI, contact Gale Boyd, Duke University at gab7@econ.duke.edu.

Energy Efficiency Improvement and Cost Saving Opportunities for the Pharmaceutical Industry

This ENERGY STAR guide for energy and plant managers discusses energy efficiency practices and energy-efficient technologies that can be implemented at various levels within a pharmaceutical manufacturing operation. Developed by EPA, in coordination with Focus participants, and using the research skills of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the guide describes existing opportunities for reducing energy use in pharmaceutical manufacturing operations.

Companies also can compare their energy management practices to the ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management. The guidelines provide a framework for strategic energy management practices that achieve results. Based on the ENERGY STAR Guidelines, the EPA’s Energy Management Assessment Matrix is a quick and easy way to identify areas for improvement in a corporate energy management program. This tool’s simple format gives energy managers an overview of potential steps for enriching their corporate energy programs.

Annual Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Focus Meetings

Annually, the ENERGY STAR Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Focus provides energy directors the opportunity to openly discuss challenges confronting energy management in their corporations. Designed with the industry, annual meetings include topics such as developing and refining corporate energy management, identifying and reducing energy use in pharmaceutical manufacturing and other facilities, options for improving energy efficiency, and company energy program highlights.
