On Friday, January 4, 2008, the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., announced the appointment of Stephen F. Sundlof, D.V.M., Ph.D. as the Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). Effective today Dr. Sundlof assumes his new position as Center Director at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN).
A noted scientist in the field of toxicology and clinician, Dr. Sundlof has worked toward the safety of food and feed throughout his career. Dr. Sundlof has extensive experience in food safety, including service on numerous domestic and international committees where he served as chairman and led the development of new international policies and safety standards in food safety. He has proven to be an exemplary leader of the Center for Veterinary Medicine since 1994. During his tenure, he has been faced with many challenging scientific and policy issues, including antimicrobial resistance in foodborne bacteria, the protein hormone rBST (a product approved in the U.S. for increasing milk production in dairy cattle), the development of regulations designed to protect cattle and the public from bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and the safety of food derived from animal clones. More recently, Dr. Sundlof has provided significant input into the development of the FDA's Food Protection Plan issued in November 2007, a strategic and comprehensive approach to improve food safety and defense in the United States (U.S.).
Prior to joining FDA, Dr. Sundlof served on the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, where he held the rank of professor of toxicology. He has received many honors and awards as a leader in his field and has authored several scientific and technical papers.
