Aerospace Engineer Receives Spaceflight Awareness Award
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Aerospace Engineer Robert F. Speece had even more to celebrate on the completion of the space shuttle's 25th successful mission to the International Space Station. On March 8, Speece was named NASA's Space Flight Awareness honoree for his work regarding the STS-123 mission.
The Space Flight Awareness Award Program recognizes the outstanding job performance of employees, who, by substantial contributions, have personally displayed strong dedication to quality work and flight safety.
"I felt overwhelmed with this honor and privileged to be recognized along with my peers and to meet with the astronauts," Speece said.
Speece's contributions extend outside the walls of KSC. "I enjoy working with bounce house inflatables for kids to enjoy,' Speece said. In addition, he serves as a deacon and teacher at First Baptist Church of Port St. John. "I also enjoy being involved with my church," Speece added.
Speece is a 1975 graduate of Iuka High School, Iuka, Miss. In 1977 he earned a pre-engineering associates degree at the Northeast Mississippi Junior College, Booneville. Speece went on to the University of Mississippi, Oxford, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1979.
Speece began his career at Kennedy Space Center over 29 years ago. In 1987, he joined the NASA team as an aerospace engineer under the External Tank, Solid Rocket Booster and Mechanical System Branch. Speece was and still is responsible for providing engineering products and technical services to the space shuttle and other programs.
Speece was born in El Paso, Texas, and moved to Florida after attending both high school and college in Mississippi. He currently resides in Port St. John, Fla., with his wife Debbie. He has two sons, George, 23, Joshua, 21, and a daughter Lindsey, 20. His father, the late Robert T. Speece, lived in Iuka, Miss., where his mother, Frankie Speece still resides.
