This 5-page module on mental health specialty care is derived from the evidence-based clinical practice guideline Management of Post Traumatic Stress, developed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense.

This module summary addresses the following topics:

  • Mental health specialty (algorithm)
  • Patient presenting to mental health with suspected post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms
  • Obtain medical history, physical examination, mental status examination, psychosocial assessment, and appropriate lab tests
  • Does patient meet Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-IV) criteria for acute stress disorder (ASD)/PTSD?
  • Educate patient and family about treatment options; develop collaborative and interdisciplinary treatment planĀ 
  • Initiate therapy for PTSD
  • PTSD with other comorbid symptoms
  • Reassess PTSD symptoms, diagnostic status, functional status, quality of life, additional treatment needs, patient preferences
  • Followup in mental health
  • Referral
