The Chief Counsel of the United States Mint supervises a Deputy Chief Counsel,
staff attorneys, and support staff. The Chief Counsel's Office is located in
Washington, D.C. and is responsible for providing legal advice and assistance
to Mint headquarters and field facilities concerning the functions and activities
of the Mint.
The United States Mint, a bureau of the Treasury Department, was founded in1792.
It produces circulating coinage for the Federal Reserve System and numismatic
and bullion coins, medals and related products which are marketed to collectors
and investors. The Mint has production facilities located in Denver, San Francisco,
West Point, and Philadelphia and is responsible for the gold bullion depository
at Fort Knox.
The Chief Counsel's Office conducts legal research and develops recommendations
and conclusions on all laws applicable to the Mint's operations. It is a general
practice of law, whose principal subject areas of work include contracting,
legislation, advertising, litigation, personnel, administration and fiscal matters.
The Chief Counsel's office also represents the Mint in various third party proceedings,
such as hearings before the Merit System Protection Board and Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission.
