Traveling Trunks
 

Both educator workshops and trunks of activities and materials are available. Call 509-522-6357 to schedule or make a reservation.

a. Whitman Mission National Historic Site. Educator workshop and field trip available. Workshop and field trip opportunities are offered with National Park Service ranger talks and demonstrations. There is a ten-minute video slide program and two walking trails.

b. Project Archaeology. Educator workshop and trunk available. Intrigue of the Past, a curriculum guide, includes lessons and information on local or regional archaeology and history, corresponding lessons, and a resource directory.

c. Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Educator trunk available. Three ring binders with informational text regarding the past, present and future ideas about sovereignty issues, forms of government, and activities related to the cultural traditions of the nations of people are included.

d. National History Day. Educator workshop and trunk available. Starting at the local level we can offer help and support to welcome a student partnership in investigating history.

e. Pioneer and Indian Toys. Educator trunk available. Many selections of toys are available for students to manipulate and play with. A study of each toy and its development could be completed adding to an understanding of historical time periods.

f. Wool at Waiilatpu. Educator trunk available. A set of materials is available for students to understand the history of the importance of wool at the Waiilatpu mission.

g. Project WILD Salmon Education Trunk. Educator workshop and trunk available. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Project WILD Salmon Education Trunk of educational activities are available to educators.

h. Stream Monitoring. Educator workshop and trunk available. Students can provide data to the Department of Fish and Wildlife by monitoring streams using a stream monitoring kit.

i. Leopold Education Project. Educator workshop and trunk available. The essays of Aldo Leopold's, A Sand County Almanac are used in observing, journaling, and sketching inquiry based teaching methods.

j. Leave No Trace Program. Educator workshop and trunk available. The Leave No Trace program is a nationally recognized resource awareness program. Seven principles are taught that emphasize care for our natural environment.

k. Wildfire; Burning Issues. Educator workshop and trunk available. The program includes a CD-ROM with active involvement in handling wildfire issues. Materials cover a wide variety of interrelationships between people and their environment.

l. Operation Outreach. Educator workshop and trunk available. The program includes pre-school through eighth grade reading materials for students. Lesson plans are included and develop compassion and sensitivity toward animals reflected in the student’s personal behavior in positive ways.

m. Bat Education. Educator trunk available. A model bat house and curriculum guide, books, posters and other educational activities are available to study bats integrating the materials into classroom curriculum.
