USGS and PWRC Scientist's participation in partnership recognized with Secretary of the Interior’s 2008 Cooperative Conservation Award.

On April 23, 2008, USGS, FWS, the Wildlife Management Institute and other partners of the Northern Forest Woodcock Initiative were awarded the Secretary of the Interior’s 2008 Cooperative Conservation Award. The Cooperative Conservation award, first presented by the Secretary in 2004, recognizes cooperative conservation achievements that have involved collaborative activity among a diverse range of entities, including Federal, State, local and tribal governments, private for profit and nonprofit institutions, other non-governmental entities and individuals. The Wildlife Management Institute has assembled a coalition among 32 public and private conservation entities to halt the decline of American woodcock populations. The Northern Forest Woodcock Initiative goal is to develop best management practices, implement those practices on selected public and private lands, monitor the species response in the demonstration areas, and involve private landowners in managing for the species, which will benefit not only the American Woodcock, but many other species that depend on early successional forests. Dan McAuley from PWRC has been involved in the Initiative from its inception developing best management practices and setting up monitoring protocols. The following agencies and organizations are partners in the Initiative: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Wildlife Conservation Society, Northeast Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Ruffed Grouse Society, Plum Creek, Inc., and the Wildlife Management Institute.
