News From the Field Astronomers at Northwestern University and NCSA Outline a Common Occurrence, The Evolution of Binary Stars and Acts of "Stellar Cannibalism"

Northwestern University's Ronald Taam has used a progression of systems at the University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) over the last seven years, to explore how stellar binaries operate. Taam, working closely with Paul Ricker, a research scientist at NCSA and assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is studying what is known as the common envelope phase.
