Volunteer and Internship Opportunities
Volunteers
The National Archives and Records Administration-Great Lakes Region, Chicago, maintains an active volunteer program. Over 30 volunteers currently participate in a wide range of activities, including:
- Basic preservation work on historical documents
- Arrangement and description projects
- Assisting researchers in the Microfilm Research Room
- Working with staff on special and long-term projects
- Assisting with special programs and outreach events
Volunteers enjoy a flexibility of work hours and projects. The Great Lakes Region requires volunteers to contribute a minimum of 72 hours during the year to retain their volunteer status.
Volunteers enjoy various benefits, including complimentary access to National Archives fee-based programs, discounts on National Archives books and merchandise, and an annual recognition luncheon.

Internships
Our Chicago office offers college-level students and other individuals the opportunity to participate in non-paid internships at the facility. If accepted, students are required to work 160 hours within a specific time frame to successfully complete an internship.
Interns at the Great Lakes Region work in a variety of program areas including:
- basic preservation
- reference and research services
- public programs
- arrangement and description of historical records
