July 29, 2004

An update to the 2003 Cost Report (PDF Format Adobe Acrobat PDF) was made and the report is now available. The the only change in this document consisted of a clarification to the following sentences:

The declassification cost estimate from one agency was over reported by approximately $65,000,000 in FY 2002. ISOO's correction of this number reduces the total security cost for FY 2002 to $5,612,070,103. No other figures reported last year require correction.

The updated version now reads as follows:

The cost estimate from one agency was over reported by approximately $76 million in FY 2002, including $65 million for declassification costs. ISOO's correction of this over reporting reduces the total security cost for FY 2002 to $5,612,070,103.

An update to a 2002 figure used in the text portion of the 2003 Cost Report is currently being made. An updated version of this report should be posted in the next 1-2 days. The files cost_report_2003.pdf and cost_report_2003.html were retracted on July 27, 2004.

J. William Leonard, Director of the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO), spoke at the National Classification Management Society's (NCMS) Annual Training Seminar.


May 4, 2004

The ISOO 2003 Annual Report to the President (PDF FormatAdobe Acrobat PDF) is now available online. The Report profiles data about the government-wide security classification program during Fiscal Year 2003. Hard copies of the report will be available by mid-May.


April 7, 2004

On April 1, 2004, the revised bylaws of the Interagency Security Classification Appeals Panel (ISCAP) were published in the Federal Register as ISOO Directive No. 1, Appendix A (PDF FormatAdobe Acrobat PDF). The revised bylaws describe the procedures to be followed by individuals or organizations who wish to bring matters before the ISCAP, and the procedures that the ISCAP will follow to resolve these matters.


March 16, 2004

NARA's strategic plan calls for all entities in NARA to provide ready access to evidence that documents the rights of American citizen's rights and the actions of Federal officials. To better serve our customers, constituents, and stakeholders, ISOO determined that the organization and presentation of our web presence needed to be improved.

We have created three distinct pathways that will assist certain groups find information in a easier, more direct manner. Click the link of the group that best describes you (These links also appear in the "Sections Menu" on every ISOO page):

By changing the presentation of our content, we hope to be able to direct each constituent to the information that they need in a more efficient manner, as well as providing more topical information.

Additionally, we have also added several sections that will provide more information to visitors:

  • FAQ's - Occasionally, ISOO will release guidance in the form of Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) pages.
  • ISOO Bulletins - As new content is added to the ISOO pages we will be creating a list of what has been added and when it was added. For anyone who just wants to find out "what is new" this is the place to go.
  • Best Practices - Though our security classification program and our inspection program we will be collecting best practices and disseminating them to our customer base. These are practices that ISOO has run across and feels are worthy of community recognition due to their excellence in one aspect or another.
