BLS Visiting Researcher Program Policy on the Use of Personal Laptop Computers at the BLS National Office


  1. Personal laptops may be used at the BLS national office provided the following rules are observed. 

    a. BLS confidential data, including outputs not yet approved as non-confidential, may not be downloaded, transcribed, or otherwise transferred onto a laptop at any time.

    b. Laptops may not be connected to the BLS Local Area Network at any time.

    c. Laptops may not be connected to BLS desktop computers or servers in any way.


  2. Personal laptops may be used to establish Internet connections provided the following rules are observed. 

  3. a. BLS confidential data, including outputs not yet approved as non-confidential, may not be transmitted or stored on the Internet at any time. 

    b. Visiting researchers must use their own private Internet service provider. 

    c. Laptops may be plugged into designated dial-out phone lines only to establish an Internet connection.

    d. Use of designated BLS phone lines is limited to 1-800 and local area code dialing.

    e. BLS will not provide technical support beyond ensuring phone jacks are enabled. 

    f. BLS will not provide phone cords.

    g. Use of the Internet using BLS phone lines is at the researcher’s own risk.


  4. This policy is subject to change at any time without advance notice. Laptop and Internet privileges may be revoked on an individual basis.
