Links to More Information about Coral Reefs

This page provides links to a variety of other useful Web sites with general information on coral reefs. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list; many of the Web sites listed below also provide useful links.

NOAA’s Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS) is designed as a single point of access to NOAA coral reef information and data products, especially those derived from NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program. The CoRIS Library includes links to many NOAA websites and publications related to coral reefs. The library also includes a list of key documents and links to NOAA offices that are involved with the Coral Reef Conservation Program.

The U.S. Coral Reef Task Force was established by Presidential Executive Order in 1998 to lead U.S. efforts to preserve and protect coral reef ecosystems. NOAA serves as co-chair of the Task Force with the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Roadmap to NOAA Resources: Corals. NOAA has many coral reef resources available online. These resources guide educators and students to specific coral data offerings within the NOS and NOAA family of products.

The NOAA Photo Library includes high-resolution images of fish, invertebrates and scuba divers from Caribbean, Pacific and Red Sea coral reefs.

NOAA Fisheries Office of Habitat Conservation Ecosystem Assessment Division is responsible for NOAA Fisheries involvement in the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program.

Resources for Divers. NOAA has many resources available for recreational divers to make trip planning easier and more enjoyable. This Web site provides links to specific NOAA services and products for divers.

NOAA Office of Communications. This page includes links to current news releases and media advisories, as well as the archive of NOAA news releases. Archives of the NOAA Magazine are now on their own page.

International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is a partnership among governments, international organizations, and non-government organizations that strives to preserve coral reefs and related ecosystems. ICRAN, ICRIN and GCRMN (below) are part of ICRI's operational network.

International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN) is a global partnership of coral reef conservation groups and scientists working to halt and reverse the decline in the health of the world's coral reefs. ICRAN is a coordinated response to ICRI's urgent call to protect coral reefs.

International Coral Reef Information Network (ICRIN) is a central coral reef communications hub that provides general coral reef information, tools and resources to support the conservation efforts of ICRI.

Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) is the operating unit of ICRI focused on global coral reef monitoring. The monitoring program is used to assess how, where and why damage is occurring and to determine the best methods for prevention.

ReefBase: A Global Information System on Coral Reefs. ReefBase is an online information system for professionals involved in coral-reef management, research, monitoring, conservation and education. The 'GEF Knowledgebase for Lessons Learned and Best Practices in the Management of Coral Reefs' project has an online toolkit for use by reef managers in developing and implementing management activities.
