Safety Tips

If you go to a public dock or other coastal location to view water plants and animals, we suggest that you:

  • Bring a responsible adult with you.
  • Check the tide tables before you go to any area that is covered by water at high tide.
  • Avoid going to the coast during storms (which can generate dangerous waves).
  • Watch your fingers and toes: docks can knock against pilings and moored boats as they move up and down with the waves.
  • Wear shoes with non-skid soles, so you don't slip into the water.
  • Wear a PFD (personal flotation device, or life vest) if you're very young or can't swim.
  • Ask someone to hold onto you if you're in a tricky position where you could lose your balance.

Most important of all, as you travel to and from the coast, wear your helmet if you're riding your bike, or your seat belt if you're in a car.
