August 21, 2001 (The Editor’s Desk is updated each business day.) Decline in fatal on-the-job highway incidentsThe number of job-related deaths from highway incidents declined in 2000 for the first time since the fatality census was begun in 1992. Although the number of fatal highway incidents was down about 9 percent from 1999 levels, highway crashes continued to be the leading cause of on-the-job fatalities in 2000, accounting for nearly a quarter of all fatal work injuries. There were 1,363 fatal work injuries from highway incidents in 2000. These data are a product of the BLS Safety and Health Statistics Program. Additional information is available from "National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, 2000," news release USDL 01-261.
