Chemical Spill Guided Tour: Part 4
To help responders get information quickly when there's been an accident, NOAA Office of Response and Restoration scientists worked jointly with colleagues from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop the CAMEO software suite.
Responders can use CAMEO to:
- Learn quickly about chemicals involved in an accident.
- Keep track of the locations of dangerous chemicals and vulnerable places like schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.
- Predict the possible effects of a toxic gas release, fire, or explosion.
In the photo at right, a firefighter and hazmat team member from the City of Bellevue Fire Department (Washington state) can use CAMEO, ALOHA, and MARPLOT on the laptop computer inside the team's hazmat vehicle.
