March 22, 2005 (The Editor’s Desk is updated each business day.) Hires and separations rates in January 2005The hires rate was 3.5 percent in January 2005, unchanged from a month earlier. No industries or regions showed a significant change in their hires rates from December to January. The hires rate is the number of hires during the month divided by employment; hires are any additions to the payroll during the month. The total separations, or turnover, rate was 3.3 percent in January 2005. The total separations rate fell in government and in the trade, transportation, and utilities industry in January. The total separations, or turnover, rate is the total number of separations during the month divided by employment; separations are terminations of employment that occur at any time during the month. These data come from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. The above data are seasonally adjusted. Data for January 2005 are preliminary and subject to revision.
