During World War II, the best piston engines used a turbocharger. This was a supercharger that drew its power from the engine' hot exhaust gases. This exhaust had plenty of power, which otherwise would have gone to waste. A turbine tapped this power and drove the supercharger. Similar turbines later appeared in jet engines. Credits - NASA |
