Cert Description
Grand Island has a population of approximately 40,000. We have a fire department with a paramedic service. Now we have a CERT with 24 members and growing. The team received funding from St. Francis Medical Centre, Hall County Keno fund and the City of Grand Island. In January of 1998 Howard Maxon, Emergency Management Director brought the CERT program to our attention. We saw the potential for this program and quickly had training scheduled for 14 people. That group is the foundation of future growth. Glenda Mason was one of those first 14 and now she is the group's facilitator. Glenda and this group have been very active. They have their own newsletter, pursued and received funding, and this will be their second year participating in the annual Harvest of Harmony Parade. The fire department is happy to sponsor them and we expect it to expand to surrounding communities beginning in our mutual aid group. In any crisis it is people helping people that get things done. This program can give people the proper tools to help themselves and others.
