Each month we create an art project that celebrates a different culture. This month we are celebrating Alaska.  Children are invited to learn about traditional Inuit (Eskimo) masks and then make a mask of their own.

GUYS READ Kick-off Event 

Guys Read logoHang out with the guys for a GUYS READ Comic Book Workshop. Enter the GUYS READ Illustration Contest. Prizes will be awarded to guys in two categories: ages 7-12 and 13-18. 

How does it work?

A guy illustrates a scene from his favorite story.  He can draw it, make it into a comic book, photograph models or his friends—however he wants to do it. 

He brings it into the library the for the GUYS READ Kick-off Event.  His illustration will be put on display and everyone can vote on it.

Exhibit September  
Artists:  Ginnie Brown and Don Brown   Ginnie Brown specializes in Southwest landscapes, mission churches and New Mexico buildings. She works  in both oils and acrylics and has won numerous ribbons in local art shows. She has also illustrated several children's books.  

Don Brown does watercolor, acrylic and pencil drawings bringing the Southwest to life. He won the 2006 Purchase Award at the NM State Fair.  He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Kansas City Art Institute.

Transformations through Music featuring the guitar and vocals of Rachelle.

Life Along the River – a Big Read Program

Dramatic Reading with Jerry Mondragon
Playwright and poet Jerry Mondragon will perform a dramatic reading from the book to highlight the need for yet another generation’s awareness of the effects of our country at war. The program begins with a talk by Dr. E.A. “Tony” Mares, Professor emeritus of English and Creative Writing at the University of New Mexico, and wraps up with a visual arts display of works inspired by "Bless Me Ultima."
