The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program at The Borough of Manhattan Community College educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, BMCC CERT Team Members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event, when professional responders are not immediately available to help. BMCC CERT Team Members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
At BMCC the CERT Program was developed and implemented by Scott Anderson, Vice President of Administration and Planning. At BMCC, Edward Sullivan, is the Director of CERT, Ed Moss, is the Deputy Director and Specialist, Zavala Salas is the FEMA/CERT Trainer. He has completed the New York State Office of Emergency Management (SEMO)/FEMA/CERT, Train-the-Trainer. Specialist Zavala-Salas is also a certified instructor in New York. He has completed the prestigious Methods of Instructions Course (MOI) given by New York Police Department; accredited by the New York State Department of Education.
