| The CERT team will be assembled and function with the Washington County Search and Rescue Team operated under the auspices of the Washington County Sheriff's Department. The Team is comprised of three (3) distinct training units: K-9 Unit, Mounted Unit (horse and mule) and Ground Unit. The Team is also supported by a Logistics Unit, which offers support through radio, computer and other technologies. Many members train to participate with more than one unit and all members respond to emergency missions, regardless of their individual specialties.
The Team has training in wilderness search & rescue, urban search & rescue, mounted search & rescue, cave rescue, and high angle rescue. All members have CPR and basic first aid; many members have advanced medical training.
The Team is a member of the National Association for Search and Rescue ("NASAR"); members receive search and rescue training and certifications through NASAR and have three NASAR instructors/coordinators on the Team. The Team also receives training through the National Cave Rescue Commission, the National Speleological Society, the Wilderness Medical Institute, the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, Rescue III International, Department of Emergency Management and other emergency response agencies.
The Team sponsors and promotes a preventive search & rescue program for 5-12 year old children, "Lost in the Woods." Team members conduct the free, interactive programs for schools, scouts, youth groups and churches. The Team also sponsors a "train the trainer" program for educators, scout leaders and other adults interested in presenting the educational program to elementary aged children. The Team also participates in "Safety Day" at the University of Arkansas and with Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse. Each year, "Lost in the Woods" reaches hundreds of children in Northwest Arkansas.
Team members also teach and promote the "Seven Principles of Leave No Trace" in conjunction with the National Outdoor Leadership School and Leave No Trace, Inc.
Members respond primarily to emergency situations in Washington County but also respond in Benton, Carroll, Crawford, Madison, Newton, and Franklin counties, and in Missouri and Oklahoma. |
