AFSC Internships:  2007

Project Title: Conversion of paper archives to digital media pertaining to cruise and taxonomy data from fish eggs, larvae, and juveniles in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea

Program: Recruitment Processes - RACE

Specific Time Frame: Any 10 week period during summer 2008; 40 hrs per week.

Location: Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington

Project Description: The Recruitment Processes (RP) program has been conducting research cruises since 1972 in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea. The program’s data collection includes cruise operations, ichthyoplankton and juvenile fish data. These data exist both in paper and database formats. The program is in the process of making use of advancements in Information Technology requiring the transfer of paper archives into electronic files to improve accessibility to a comprehensive and uniform electronic data archival and retrieval system.

The intern will assist with organizing paper archives, scanning forms, and creating PDF files utilizing the Adobe Professional software application. The intern may also assist with documenting the data process and determine whether or not there are missing steps in the data preparation, quality control, and archival that should be added to our current protocols.

This experiential project will provide the intern with a working knowledge of the types of data collected on research cruises and archival techniques employed. The intern will also gain experience in the Information Technology utilized in a large research facility such as NOAA. The intern will be required to write a short report describing their internship experience in data streaming and systems analysis.

At the end of the internship the intern will have produced digital files from paper archives to be stored and used by the RP program scientists. The intern would have contributed to the construction of a new data archival and retrieval system.
