AFSC Internships:  2008

Project Title: Digitizing historical humpback whale photos for the FlukeFinder database

 
Program: Cetacean Assessment & Ecology - NMML

 
Specific Time Frame: Any 10 weeks that the intern is free

 
Location: Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington


 
Project Description: The National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) has recently created a new humpback whale photo-ID matching database called FlukeFinder. This is a project that is transitioning away from traditional analog photo methods to state-of-the-art digital photography.

The intern project will assist with this transition to digital by using a new, fast digitizing method to integrate our extensive, historical photo collection into our new digital database. The intern will help digitize historical humpback whale photo-ID photos and integrate the digitized photos into our new digital FlukeFinder database.

In addition, the intern will provide a progress report on the digitization process and help the mentor develop a web-based document explaining the new digitization methods that have been developed for this project. If there is a workshop for interns to share information about their projects, the intern will develop a PowerPoint presentation explaining the digital techniques.

 
Field Work Description: None planned

 
Qualifications Required: Willingness to learn advanced digital photo techniques. Willingness to learn database techniques.

 
Benefits to Student: Database skills, digital photo manipulation skills, some organizational and writing skills.
