AFSC Internships:  2008

Project Title: Cataloging digital images of scientific studies in Alaska

Program: Fisheries Interaction Team (FIT) - REFM

Specific Time Frame: Summer 2008, or other during school year if possible.

Location: Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington

Project Description: Cataloguing and tagging digital images with proper metadata for scientific and marketing purposes is an important task towards achieving the goals of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s Fishery Interaction Team (FIT), as well as the general Outreach Program.

This project will be a pilot project using images taken during past FIT research surveys in Alaska. The intern will use standard AFSC controlled vocabulary to tag digital images with metadata. The intern may need to create vocabulary specific to the images used in this project and will be added to the AFSC controlled vocabulary list. The intern will use Portfolio 8.5 (Extensis) software to tag digital images and place in a catalogue. The intern will work closely with intern mentor to determine criteria for quality images. If time allows, the intern will work with AFSC IT specialist to create an image database with finished images. The intern will be required to write up a report documenting the protocol used to catalogue and tag images and to create a slide show or other type of product for use on the AFSC website.

The results of this project will help in creating an AFSC-wide protocol for the archiving of image data. Results of this project will also contribute to making images available for creating outreach posters, web-pages and other educational material.

This project could provide several products for the intern upon completion of the internship.

Field Work Description: None required. If necessary, field opportunities may be created.
