Project Description: |
This is an experiential internship focusing on using DNA-based techniques to identify fin and shellfish species and their parasites.
As an intern you will learn & assist in DNA extraction, PCR, and DNA electrophoresis from various species of crabs, parasites and/or fishes. Depending on time and aptitude, intern may learn DNA sequencing.
At the end of the internship, the intern will be required to write an report on their experiences for the AFSC website and will have a lab notebook with basic molecular techniques and observations, gel images, and results generated during internship.

Qualifications Required: |
Good work ethic, punctuality, willingness to ask a lot of questions, attention to detail, patience, familiarity with Word & Excel, chemistry lab or molecular lab course, genetics lecture course. Prior molecular work experience is not necessary, but would be an advantage.

Benefits to Student: |
Practical knowledge of and experience in DNA-based techniques useful to ecologists, wildlife or fisheries biologists, etc. Exposure to a research lab with multiple ongoing projects, various techniques, & a variety of research animals etc. (e.g., population dynamics, population genetics, DNA barcoding, parasitology, marine mammals, fishes, shellfish, dinoflagellates). |
