AFSC Internships:  2008

Project Title: Evaluation of management/science literature

Program: Systemic Management Studies - NMML

Specific Time Frame: Summer of 2008, for a total of 10 weeks anytime between June 1 and Oct. 1.

Location: Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington

Project Description: This project will provide a unique experience in a field of applied macroecology where policy and management are based on empirical patterns of sustainability. It will involve an appraisal of published literature purportedly in support of management. A sample of literature will be evaluated with respect to whether or not a management question is identified, and whether or not the published information is consonant with that question (or an implied question).

The intern will be responsible for finding and evaluating a sample of published papers in the published literature. These papers will be evaluated according to whether they are descriptive, explanatory, predictive, or methodological. The intern will identify whether or not there is consonance with a management question. The work will involve finding and using papers from various sources (e.g., Conservation Biology) almost exclusively from the Web.

The final products will be graphic presentations of frequency distributions showing the numbers of papers falling into the various categories listed (and their combinations). Graphs will appear in published reports and on the AFSC Web site.

At the end of the internship, there will be a short report to be made available on the AFSC Web site, and (in the longer term) a more detailed report to be published (in a NOAA Tech. Memo or as part of a paper dealing with the concept of systemic management more generally).

Field Work Description: No field work is required in this internship.

Qualifications Required: General familiarity with computers and the Internet, basic use of EXCEL. Previous experience finding and downloading .pdf files from publishers’ web sites would be quite useful but can be learned ‘on-the-job.’ Experience using bibliographic software would be helpful but not mandatory (will also be part of the learning experience of this internship).

Benefits to Student: The student will learn about the development of scientific and management questions that match and are consistent. He/She will learn about the shortcomings of conventional management and the solution to these problems offered by systemic management.
