NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
Explorers Club Award for Exploration
New York City, New York
March 25, 2000
Thank you. We at the National Science Foundation are
honored and very proud to be a recipient of your Annual
"Support of Exploration Award." Exploration is NSF's
"raison d'ĂȘtre"; discovery learning, and innovation
are our focus.
We support exploration and discovery in a comprehensive
way.
Our mission is to fund discovery across all territories,
and between and among all disciplines and to integrate
it all to a holistic view. It is a mission of balance
that is designed to build the entire exploratory infrastructure
of the science, engineering, and technology enterprise
of the United States.
As an agency, we are dedicated to funding vision and
foresight. And we come to vision and foresight by
investing, through peer and merit review, in the most
promising people who have exciting and elucidating
ideas.
I am pleased to report that our record is exceptionally
good -- even good enough to receive the Explorers
Club Award.
NSF has been an industrious, studious, and unobtrusive
institution over the years. This year, however, we
are celebrating our 50th anniversary and
we want to share our achievements broadly. The larger-than-life
NSF 50 poster is here on display for starters.
We have compiled a list and description of what we
believe to be the 50 hottest discoveries enabled by
our investments. Each has made its mark in contributing
new light to an established field or moved us a step
closer to an emerging field. They have been catalysts
to push our thinking in a new direction. We have dubbed
them our "Nifty Fifty."
Rest assured that we will brag a great deal about this
prestigious "Explorers Club Award" during our 50th
anniversary celebrations this year... and beyond.
On behalf of Director Rita Colwell and the entire staff
of the National Science Foundation, I thank you for
this great honor.
