Early Academic Skills, Not Behavior, Best Predict School Success

An educational study unprecedented in scope finds children who start school with elementary math and reading skills are the most likely to have later academic success--whether or not they have social or emotional problems. While surprising, the seeming lack of association between social and emotional behaviors and future academic success held as true for boys as for girls and as true for children from affluent as for children from less affluent families. Full story

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering, with an annual budget of $6.06 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to over 1,900 universities and institutions.
